29 Feb Chemical imbalance vs. emotional imbalance
Injectable neurotoxinsn (marketed under the brands Botox, Xeomin, and Dysportis) are commonly known to enhance the beauty of a woman who is showing signs of aging. Now, however, these chemicals can be used to ease the harshness of depression. For as long as scientists have known, wrinkles (muscle contractions) are a premature sign of depression. Now, studies from the University of Maryland and University of Texas show the relationship between wrinkles and depression through the use of neurotoxins. Not only does the injection prevent you from frowning, it also helps regulate an imbalance of chemicals in your brain. The brain gets signals from receptors all over the body and then translates those signals into emotions and feelings. Dermatologists and Neurologists have come together to show that these substances help cure depression.
“You are not mentally imbalanced, you are chemically imbalanced,” says Dr. Angelo Sambunaris, founder and Medical Director of the Institute for Advanced Medical Research. Depression is a mental illness characterized by an imbalance of critical chemicals in the human brain such as acetylcholine (ACh). Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates the muscles and sends sensory neurons, is released when we attempt to contract our muscles. This contraction of muscles causes wrinkles in the forehead. Botulinum toxin interferes with neural transmission by blocking the release of acetylcholine. Bottom line, a wrinkle-fixing injection inhibits release of ACh, which prevents muscle contraction. The buildup of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular joints then sends negative feedback signals to the brain with the message to stop creating more acetylcholine. Lower levels of acetylcholine decrease the amount of “stress” that the brain has, and further reduces the feelings associated with depression.
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. If you have a loved one facing symptoms of depression such as loss of energy, fatigue, feeling lonely, hopelessness, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, encourage them to get assessed so that they can get proper medical help and relief from their symptoms.
