Why offer Ketamine?

Why did I begin offering ketamine to my patients and to the community?  The answer is one that I provide often, and it’s formulation has evolved over some time.

For over 25 years I have been at the cutting edge of medical research focused on identifying and testing new/better treatments for psychiatric illness.  Although every new medication we identified and tested and got through the FDA approval process was an improvement over previous treatments,  there was always room for improvement.  I began to see that there were always patients that reported a less than adequate response to their medication.  Some patients reported concern over their need to use add-on therapies and others had tolerability issues with their medication.  Although we had a multitude of treatments available, clearly there was a need for something better.

When the National Institute of Mental Health conducted a clinical trial of ketamine in depression that revealed a response in 100 minutes AND that two thirds of patients reported feeling better by week one — everyone stopped and paid attention, including me.

Ketamine is a game changer; it is more effective and better tolerated than other medications.  The good news is that ketamine clinics are popping up all over the country, offering access to this new breakthrough treatment for patients who continue to struggle with depression and anxiety.

However, I was concerned when my patients shared how that when they investigated ketamine clinics,  they were staffed by anesthesiologist and not by psychiatrists.  Those same patients asked me to begin offering ketamine as a treatment option.  Well, we are open and operational and welcoming new patients!
