Myths about Child Depression

Myth: Depression is just a childhood phase.

Fact: It is true that many children experience changes in behavior as they grow and mature. Yes, some children go through phases, but there is a certain point where a parent needs to ask “Is this really just a phase?” When these phases occur enough to be a concern, your child could be experiencing something far greater than a phase. This could very easily be depression. Depression is not a “phase” that comes and goes. Depression is a medical condition caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
