10 Aug How Does My ADHD Affect My Mood?
Comorbidity sounds like a scary word for a lot of people. However, it really is not. Disorders that individuals experience simultaneously are known as comorbid disorders. For example, an individual diagnosed with both ADHD and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has what is known as comorbid disorders. Research has shown that those diagnosed with ADHD often have overlapping symptoms with other common disorders such as eating disorders, OCD, obesity, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse disorders. In fact, 87% of patients diagnosed with ADHD actually have two or more disorders. Those diagnosed with ADHD are:
- 20% more likely to be diagnosed with symptoms of depression
- 15% more likely to be diagnosed with symptoms of an anxiety disorder
- 6% more likely to be diagnosed with symptoms of bipolar disorder (type of depression)
Data shows an overlap in symptoms in a minority of patients with ADHD. It is important to know that as an adult with ADHD, you have a higher chance of experiencing symptoms of many other disorders. It is important that you don’t confuse your ADHD symptoms with symptoms that may be the result of an entirely different disorder.
