09 Oct ADHD Case Study: Tom, his Son and ADHD
Preface:
ADHD, a medical disorder passed on from parent to child, has symptoms that generally get worse as age increases.
If untreated, it can result in lower quality of life. How? It can affect the individual’s:
1) Social interactions: symptoms of ADHD can ultimately cause mood swings and anxiety in adult. Lack of attentiveness can also pose a problem socially, as well as follow-through.
2) Work-life: adults may have trouble finishing projects, paying attention during meetings, and dealing with money.
3) Family-life: ADHD causes difficulty with maintaining stable relationships with one’s spouse and/or kids. Irritability can also lead to relational problems.
The Case:
Tom realized how well his son Justin did after receiving a clear diagnosis and treatment for his ADHD. It was during these discussions with the doctor that Tom realized that he also exhibited signs of ADHD, and most likely had passed it on to his son. Of course Tom wanted help for his son, but now the scope of the situation had changed for him. In the process of getting help for his own ADHD (after being medically diagnosed), Tom wanted to help the medical community investigate newer and better treatments for his son, and for others like him.
Tom was exhibiting the symptoms of ADHD at work. He was easily distracted from work. He had to work extremely hard to finish group assignments. At home, he forgot to do errands a promised, and he frequently fought with his wife and son. In general, he never paid much attention to anything that was going around him and felt that he was constantly in a chaotic environment. He often remembered how his son behaved a few years before he had an established diagnosis.
Justin was always different from the other kids at his school. His teacher frequently commented that he was having problems concentrating in class and working with other kids; he was a whirlwind of activity. Tom finally had taken him to a nearby medical facility where they diagnosed him with ADHD. The doctors established a treatment plan. Justin’s hyperactive behavior and scholastics improved.
Thinking about his own situation, Tom realized that it was finally time that he gain control over his symptoms. Medical help was what he needed. He had read about medical research facilities and decided to set an appointment for an assessment;
He was assessed by the Institute for Advanced Medical Research. He qualified for, and participated in an adult ADHD clinical study and received VIP treatment throughout the process. He was able to get answers for himself, and provide assistance to the medical community in finding effective treatment options for all who suffer from ADHD.
