06 Jun Judy: Why Clinical Trials?
It was a sunny afternoon, but the beautiful weather outside did not accurately reflect the weather inside of me. I felt so overwhelmed and so exhausted. As I was thumbing through my Facebook feed, I saw pictures of happy friends and shining smiling faces. The more I looked through my feed, the more I felt a sense of loneliness and dissatisfaction with my life. I had tried countless other treatments but to no avail. I was frustrated with the lack of attention I was receiving from my private doctor. I couldn’t believe I was paying this guy so much for no improvement in my life. Each month it was the same, “Smile more, eat healthy, spend time with family, and continue taking antidepressants and you will see results soon.” When is soon?
I realized that at some point, either my money or my time would run out, and I had to find a solution. After realizing that my doctor did not have an answer, I came to the decision of participating in a clinical trial. I did not know what exactly a clinical trial was, but I knew it might be the only chance I had to get better. After searching the internet for something nearby, I found the Institute for Advanced Medical Research. With their phone number on the home page, I decided to give it a shot. I was shocked to find out that the phone rang only one time, and I got to speak with a staff member before the second ring. I didn’t have to listen to automated voice messages or click on more numbers to speak with someone.
After a quick phone screen, I was scheduled for an appointment, and relatively quickly too. After noticing how friendly the environment was at the Institute and seeing how there were no hidden traps or fees, I enrolled into a free research study to try a medicine for my depression. It was cutting-edge, as it hadn’t yet reached the market. Throughout the course of the study, I received the attention I needed with my once a week appointment with the doctor. I got to know Dr. Sambunaris very well, and it was easy to call in and ask questions. Get this- they encourage you to call! I always felt like I was in the hands of someone who truly cared about my recovery.
