Myths About ADD

Myth: Attempting to self-medicate by drinking (i.e. caffeine), or smoking (i.e. cigarettes) will address my ADD symptoms and will help me feel better.

Fact: While it may make you feel better temporarily, self-medicating is not a permanent solution to the ADHD symptoms you are experiencing. In fact, they oftentimes create bigger problems related to high blood pressure, cardiac rhythm abnormalities, irritability, insomnia, and increased restlessness, and thus worsen existing symptoms. Treating your symptoms with ADD medication under a physician’s clinical supervision, however, is the only way in which you ensure that you are targeting the root of your symptoms.
